 报告题目:A brief introduction to scientific sustainability analysis

 报告人: Noam Lior, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, University of Pennsylvania

 Abstract:

 It is amply documented that the worldand most of its individual countries experience an exponential increase in consumption of nonrenewable resources of all kinds and in generating pollution in magnitudes that cause irreparable damage to our environment and long-term survivability. Sustainable activities describe a logical process that takes carefully into account all relevant consequences within time and space boundaries that are large enough to ensure satisfactory existence for us and other humans, and of our and their descendants. These “all relevant consequences” are primarily economic, environmental and social, the three pillars of sustainable development. Rational sustainable development requires the development of quantitative sustainability science, which is indeed evolving through the efforts of the multi-disciplinary sustainability science community. A first important part of this is the definition, and adaption of the sustainability metrics/indices that define each pillar, the second is the determination of the relative weights of the pillars, and the third is the normalization and aggregation of these weighted metrics to a “composite sustainability index” (CSI) that can be used for assessing and comparing process sustainability. To render the CSI useful for sensitivity analysis and optimization, we also need the functional dependence of the metrics, and sometimes of the weighting factors, on the process parameters. This presentation describes the needed mathematical foundations for formulating, calculating and using the CSI.It is advisable and feasible to integrate quantitative sustainability analysis into the development and design of all devices and systems that are proposed for large scale use.

 报告人简历:

Noam Lior教授就职于美国宾西法尼亚大学机械工程与应用力学系。1973年毕业于美国伯克利加州大学机械工程系,工学博士。Lior教授是美国机械工程师学会ASME Fellow及美国航空航天学会AIAA Associate Fellow,曾长期担任国际能源学报主编、ASME太阳能学报编委及国际太阳能学会美国分部主席,目前仍担任多个国际学报主编或编委等重要学术职务。在能源利用、传热学、太阳能热发电、燃烧学、海水淡化与水处理、可持续发展等领域均有重要建树与贡献,发表学术论文300余篇,编撰多部学术专著,曾两度获得美国机械工程师学会(ASME)学会奖及十多项其它国际奖项,包括 ASME (Philadelphia Section) Award (1977),SAE Ralph R. Teetor 杰出教育奖(1986),日本科技促进学会特别会员奖(Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Senior Fellow Award, 1991),ASME 先进能源系统部 Edward F. Obert 最佳论文奖(1992),国际水文科学与技术基金会荣誉会员,日本传热学会科学奖(1994),国际海水淡化学会最佳论文奖(1995),ASME 先进能源系统分会最佳论文奖(2004),ASME 传热学报杰出评委奖(2005),ASME Edward F. Obert 学会奖(2010)等,在国际能源领域享有重要声誉与影响力。

Lior教授对中国非常友好,曾主持出版国际能源学报中国能源可持续发展专刊,专程到我国西部地区(新疆、西藏等地)实地考察可再生能源发展状况,并出任由中国工程热物理学会主办的国际能源学术会议科学委员会主席,和我所分布式供能与可再生能源实验室建立了长期良好的合作关系。
